This is an exciting road that has many switchbacks down and up canyon gorges. At 6 miles, there is a small stream that crosses the road and you can park on the right. Follow the water into the canyon. Within 100 feet you are in a narrow canyon. This slot canyon is 2 miles long and ends at Sheep Creek which is a beautiful wider gorge.

The Grand Staircase or the official name “Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument” is an amazing collection of stunning feats of nature. It is a massive area bordered by Capital Reef on the East, the Vermillion Cliffs and Lake Powell on the South with Bryce Canyon and Kodachrome State Park on the Western side. Our beautiful plateau, across the valley from our Stone Canyon Inn, of Powell Point is to the north of it. Utah’s scenic highway Rt 12 goes directly through it, as a beautiful winding path on an east/west direction. Although the Grand Staircase is not as famous as our immediate local treasures, it certainly should not be passed up when visiting the Stone Canyon Inn.

Red Canyon is your first natural wonder – just before the entrance to Bryce Canyon National Park. It is right on RT 12, coming from the west area towards Bryce Canyon. There is a Visitor Center on the north side of Rt 12, just inside the beginning of the area. There are fantastic trails all throughout the area. It even has designated ATV Trails for those that wish to ride throughout Red Canyon, rather than hike it. There is also a fantastic bike path that goes all the way into Bryce Canyon National Park!
